He won 11 Swedish championships in singles between 1927-34 (of which 6 indoors). As a doubles player, he had his greatest success nationally with Harry Ramberg. The two won 12 Swedish championships in doubles (1927-1933). He also won 10 national championships in mixed doubles (1930-1941) of which 6 together with Sigrid Fick. He won the last two mixed doubles titles together with Birgit Gullbrandsson.

Among the merits, he defeated the German major player Gottfried von Cramm in 1933.

Östberg participated in the Swedish Davis Cup team in 1929, 1933-34 and 1936-37. He played a total of 17 matches and won 6 of them. Three of the wins were in doubles together with Kalle Schröder.
