About

Michael (Mike) Stas, as he became known, was born in the Netherlands and was involved in Dutch resistance to the Nazi occupation during World War Two. He later moved to the United States where, in 1953, he married an American, Barbara Knapp, who was famous for a time as a fashion model. Michael Stas was a member of the Dutch Davis Cup team in the early 1950s.
