About

Josef Gruss played tennis at the 1908 Olympics, and was on the Czechoslovakian fencing team at the 1919 Inter-Allied Games and 1920 Olympics, although he did not compete at Antwerp. Gruss was a medical doctor who practiced gynecology and was a senior surgeon at Praha Hospital. He was primarily responsible for the IOC instituting an annual Olympic Day. Gruss was awarded the Olympic Diploma of Merit in 1965. He was a member of the IOC from 1946-65, when he resigned, after which he was made an Honorary Member.
