John A. Barrett was the brother of fellow lawn tennis player Herbert Roper Barrett. John attended Oxford University; while a student there, he took part in the annual Varsity lawn tennis matches between Oxford and Cambridge. He served with the British Army during World War One, reaching the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in the 16th Battalion of the Rifle Brigade. He was killed in action in July 1917 during the Battle of Paschendale.
