About

Richard was born August 3, 1935 to Anna Belle and Gilbert Schuette in Yoakum Texas, but spent his life in Houston. He graduated from St. Thomas High School, University of St. Thomas, and University of Texas Medical Branch. After completing his residency, he founded Southwest Radiology and practiced radiology for 20 years. An avid tennis player, he won his first USTA national tournament at age 17 and his last at age 50, winning 7 national titles. He achieved a #1 USTA National Ranking in Men\'s 35 & 45 Doubles with John Been. In 2001, Richard was inducted into the Texas Tennis Hall of Fame. His impact as a physician, tennis player and fisherman earned him the American Medical Sportsman of the Year in 1974. He served as president of the Houston Tennis Association in 1972 and president of the Houston Racquet Club in 1983. When knee problems ended his tennis career, he became a 6-handicap golfer with an astonishing two holes-in-one. He loved fishing, especially fishing the lake on his Dobbin farm. In retirement, he found great joy in his family especially meticulously preparing gourmet meals for those he loved. His sense of humor and innate goodness will continue to be memories for his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.
