James L. Provines was born and raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was a 4-year scholarship player at the University of Oklahoma from 1957-1961 and coached the Sooners in 1961-1962 before embarking on a 30-year career in the U.S. Air Force. He has played tennis all over the world, winning the Armed Forces Singles & Doubles Championships in Europe in 1967. He was the State singles champion of Ohio in 1969; was the Hawaii State Sectional Men's 35 singles champion in 1982; was the Northern California Men’s 45 Singles Champion in 1985; and was the Nevada State Men's 45 singles champion in 1985. He was the #1 ranked singles player in Arizona in 1997 and winner of the USTA Men’s 60 National Clay Court Doubles Championship in 2000. In the National Senior Olympics, he won the gold medal in the Men's 55 singles in 1995; won the gold medal in Men's 55 singles in 1997; and won the gold medal in Men's 60 singles in 2001. He was inducted into the Dayton Tennis Hall of Fame in 1996.
