About

Hamilton Emmons was the son of Robert Wales Emmons, a merchant, and Mary Isabella Emmons (née Crow). The Emmons family moved from America to England after Robert Emmons retired from his business in the 1870s and settled in the spa town of Leamington. Hamilton Emmons went to school in Leamington before going up to Oxford University, where he matriculated in October 1883; he studied chemistry at Balliol College but did not pursue a profession in later life.

Hamilton Emmons married Marion Irving van Buren on 1 June 1893 in New York. Marion was the daughter of Smith Thompson van Buren and his first wife, Henriette Eckford van Buren (née Irving). Smith Thompson van Buren was the youngest of the five children of Martin Abrahamsen van Buren and Hannah van Buren (née Hoes). Martin A. Buren (1782-1862) was the eighth President of the United States, holding office from 1836 to 1840.

Hamilton and Marion Emmons had two children together: a son, named Robert after his paternal grandfather, and a daughter, named Marion after her mother. The family later settled in the village of Hamble-le-Rice in Hampshire, where Hamilton Emmons died in April 1933 at the age of 69.
