Thomas H. Butterworth was the brother of fellow lawn tennis players Alexander K. Butterworth and George M. Butterworth. Thomas H. Butterworth joined the Royal Navy, rising to the rank of captain. He died in British-occupied Burma in June 1895 at the age of 27.
