Edward Fitzgerald was the brother of fellow lawn tennis players Robert and Elizabeth (‘Eliza’) Fitzgerald. They were three of the seven children born to Robert Fitzgerald (senior), a native of the town of Tralee in County Kerry, Ireland, and Emily Blackwell Fitzgerald (née Hunt), who was from Balmain in Sydney.
