Obituary – Death of Mr William M. Brownlee

We regret to announce the death of Mr William Methven Brownlee which took place yesterday at his residence, Lansdowne House, Woodland Road, Tyndall’s Park. Mr Brownlee had been in indifferent health for some time, and for the past few days had been confined to his room. He gradually became worse, and expired at nine o’clock yesterday morning. The deceased gentleman, who was a member of the firm Dunlop, Mackie and Co., leaves a widow [née Anna Dunlop], a daughter of the late Mr Matthew Dunlop, and three children, his elder son being Mr Leigh Dunlop Brownlee.

Mr Methven Brownlee was widely known on account of the interest he took in various branches of sport. At one time he was a successful cricketer, and wrote much on the subject, his best-known work being “The Biography of William Gilbert Grace,” which deals with the wonderful records of the veteran cricketer.

He has also been a leading lawn tennis player, and his book on lawn tennis was regarded as one of the standard works on the subject. In all his writings on matters relating to athletics Mr Brownlee showed himself possessed of a keen judgment, with which were combined special powers of expression. He was fifty-six years of age.
