Hagen became Norwegian tennis champion in 1932, and was also double champion a total of ten times (indoor and outdoor). From 1930 to 1939 he played all the finals in the outdoor NM and won seven doubles championships (including with Jan Staubo as a partner). He also participated for many years on Norway's Davis Cup team. As a trustee, he worked for Ready and in the Norwegian Tennis Association, where he was vice-president and national team captain.
Hagen was the father of the politician Carl I. Hagen and the historian Jorunn Bjørgum.
