Obituary – Mr Stanley N. Doust

Mr Stanley N. Doust, the former lawn tennis player and for many years a distinguished writer on the game, has died in a London hospital at the age of 83. He was lawn tennis correspondent of the Daily Mail for 31 years before his retirement in 1951.

Doust was an Australian who came from Sydney, where he claimed to have learnt the game on asphalt courts. One of the last of the world’s great “dolly” servers and particularly nimble about the court, he was seen at his best in doubles matches. Like Herbert Roper Barrett, his great British contemporary, he used a well-placed, low-bouncing service that forced his opponent to hit upwards while Doust moved in to volley.

The effectiveness of his craft at a time when the game was changing with the arrival of the world’s first cannon ball server, Maurice McLoughlin, from California, is reflected in Doust’s record in doubles. As captain of the 1913 Australasian team Doust was on the winning side against McLoughlin in the Davis Cup match with the United States. He was Wimbledon doubles finalist in 1909 (with Harry Parker), and won his last major title, the British Covered Courts mixed championship, with Joan Ridley in 1926.
