Attended Cambridge University. Scholar, 1883; Classical Tripos, 1st Class, 1884; B.A. (16th Wrangler) 1885; M.A. 1889. Fellow, 1886. Assistant Demonstrator in Experimental Physics, 1887-8. Admitted at Lincoln\'s Inn, 21 November 1889. Professor of Physics at the Royal Holloway College, Englefield Green, 1888-93; at McGill University, Montreal, Canada, 1893-8. Quain Professor of Physics at University College, London, 1898-1902; at the Royal College of Science, London (afterwards incorporated in the Imperial College of Science and Technology) 1902-30. F.R.S., 1894. Rumford medal, 1906. C.B.E., 1920.

Devised, with Professor H. T. Barnes, of McGill University, electrical methods of calorimetry. His inventive genius had a wide range and included a reservoir pen (before the regular use of the fountain pen), an apparatus for recording simultaneously the force and direction of the wind, and a system of shorthand, ?which did not require phonetics.? Took part in the first International ?Steam Tables? Conference in London, 1929. Married and had issue. Author, \"A Manual of Cursive Shorthand\"; \"Steam Tables\"; \"The Properties of Steam\".
