Thomas Dickson was the brother of fellow lawn tennis player John McGeagh Dickson. They were two of the six children – three sons and three daughters – of Thomas Alexander Dickson (1833-1909), an Irish Liberal Party politician from County Tyrone, and Elizabeth Greer Dickson (née MacGeagh; 1830-97), who was from Cookstown, also in County Tyrone.
