Death of Mr W.J. Nimmo

Mr William John Nimmo, of Eden Vale, Castle Eden, head of one of the best-known brewery firms in the north-east, and a former chairman of Durham County Cricket Club, died last night at the age of 83. Mr Nimmo was chairman and managing director of J. Nimmo and Sons Ltd., the Castle Eden Brewery. Until his illness a few weeks ago Mr Nimmo had gone to his office every day.

Tennis player

He was president of Castle Eden Cricket Club, which won the Durham Coast League last season for the first time in its history. Until he was 40, Mr Nimmo was well known as a tennis player. He was also a founder member of Castle Eden Golf Club.

Mr Nimmo was a member of Castle Eden Parish Council for 50 years, and served as chairman on several occasions. He was a magistrate on the Castle Eden Bench for many years until he retired two years ago under the age limit. He was at one time a member of Durham County Council.
