A civil engineer by profession,he worked in Ceylon, South Africa and India. An employee of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, he built railways and bridges in the former colonies, his most notable work being the railway from Johannesburg to the Victoria Falls, including the famous bridge over the falls. Also a Welsh international rugby union forward.During his time in South Africa he played rugby for Western Province.
