Frederick Gurney (Gurney) Henzell was born 8 February 1870 to parents Frederick Lumley Henzell and Fanny Maria Robinson. He married Annie Charlotte Campbell on 15 July 1897 at Brisbane. Annie Charlotte Campbell was born on 7 May 1872 at Brisbane, to parents Edwin Campbell and Harriett Eliza Platt.

In 1906 Frederick Gurney Henzell purchased property at Mount Pleasant, being parts of Portions 8, 11 and 14 Parish of Pine. Before moving on to the land Gurney Henzell had been a commission agent working in his father's business in Brisbane. Gurney and Annie Henzell had five children, all of whom attended Mount Pleasant School.
