Kenneth Marschner’s death – Great loss to the game

By Mervyn Weston

Tennis enthusiasts will learn with regret of the death of Ken Marschner, the brilliant young Metropolitan Cricket Club and Linton Cup player. He showed greater promise than any junior produced in Victoria in the last decade. Marschner, who was aged only 18 years, came to the fore in December 1934, when he won the Victorian Schoolboys’ Championship, defeating George Holland in the final. In 1935, he retained his title by defeating Colin Long.

Ill health prevented Marschner from joining Long and Holland in the recent Linton Cup matches in Sydney. Marschner was a member of the 1936 Linton Cup team which was runner-up to New South Wales in the national carnival at Adelaide. In December 1935, he represented Victoria against Tasmania. He had many fine victories during two seasons with the Metropolitan Cricket Club in pennant tennis.

Rapid improvement in 1936 gained him selection in the Victorian squad of nine players chosen for interstate practice last November. He was also included in this State’s juniors for special coaching and training under the Davis Cup plan. Unfortunately, he was forced to withdraw from play because of a collapse in health. After having been seriously ill for several weeks he improved greatly, and his complete recovery was expected. To assist his recuperation he was taken to Mornington only a few days ago. He died there on Sunday.

A lefthander with a delightful fluent style, Marschner had the natural genius of a great stroke maker.
