John Wilkerson, born in San Antonio, won the high school state singles and doubles titles in 1957. He graduated from Texas Southern University in 1972 after winning the Southwestern Athletic Conference singles and doubles championships and the American Tennis Association national championship. Wilkerson became the tennis director at MacGregor Park (1974-1983) and coached top world-ranked players Zina Garrison and Lori McNeil. Wilkerson received numerous awards, including the Arthur Ashe Safe Passage Award and the Lloyd Sessions Educational Merit Award. He was a co-founder and director of the Zina Garrison All Court Tennis Foundation.
