Erasmus D. Borrowes was educated at Cheltenham College, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England. He gained the rank of Ensign in 1852 in the service of the 80th Foot. He fought in the Second Burma War in 1853. He fought in the Indian Mutiny, where he was wounded. He gained the rank of Captain in 1859. He succeeded to the title of 9th Baronet Borrowes, of Grangemellon, co. Kildare on 27 May 1866. He gained the rank of Major in 1867 in the service of the 13th Foot. He held the office of Sheriff of County Kildare in 1873. He held the office of Sheriff of Queen’s County in 1880.
