Although born in Scotland, James Macfarlane emigrated to New Zealand in 1876 and became a successful commission merchant and grain broker. In 1890, he married Edith Mary Durrieu, a native of Torquay, Devon, England. Like him, she also took part in some lawn tennis tournaments, as would at least two of their five surviving children, Marjorie and Marion. Marjorie Macfarlane became one of New Zealand’s top female tennis players of the 1920s and 1930s, and notably won the women’s singles title at the New Zealand Championships in early January 1929.
