About

Friedrich Frenz was a tall man with a great talent who never achieved the success which could have been expected from a man of his abilities.Although he had a magnifecent service and very good groundstrokes,he was not able to adapt his game in critical situations and sometimes lost control of his talent which resulted in overpowering his strokes, especially his volleys.Despite these deficiencies he was able to beat more highly rated players like Bunny Austin,J.C.Gregory,G.P.Hughes or Roderich Menzel on a good day.He once had a set point against Big Bill Tilden during an exhibition match in Cologne in 1929 and won a set against Gerald Patterson.
Frenz was chosen twice to represent Germany in the Davis Cup in 1933 playing one singles against Ireland and 2 singles against Denmark at the side of Gottfried von Cramm. He was listed in the National Rankings from 1925 to 1938.His best years were 1928:5,1929:6,1930:4,1932:6,1933:2,1934:5 and 1935:8.He obtained 10 German
Tennis Championships during his career:the National Singles title in 1928 and 1929,the International Covered Court Doubles 1930 (with Dr.W.Dessart),the National TeamChampionship 1931,1933 (both with Rot-Weiss Berlin) and 1935 (with the combined team of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein),the National Senior Singles 1948 and 1950 and the National Senior Doubles in 1950 and 1951.
His greatest success on the international scene was reaching the 4th Round at Wimbledon in 1928. His biggest achievements on the national level were doubtless the German National Singles Championship in 1928 and 1929.
Almost during his whole career he represented the THC Klipper Hamburg except in the years 1931 to 1933 when he wore the colours of LTTC Rot-Weiss Berin.
In his life outside tennis he was a bank employee. In 1949 he was forced to leave his home town Rostock to evade communist rule and had to restart his life in Hamburg.

The facts for this biography are taken from DTZ and the tennis manuals 1927-1939.
