About

Vasco Horta e Costa was, in this period, the main player in the north of the country and one of the best Portuguese tennis players.
Horta e Costa was born in 1906, in Porto, starting to play tennis at Velo Clube, under the influence of his brother Miguel, Semião Pinto de Mesquita and Fernando Beires do Vale. In 1916, he won his first cup.
In 1925, Comércio do Porto wrote the following about the 19-year-old player, after a 4-6, 6-0 and 6-4 victory over James Adam in the Velo Clube championship:
Vasco is a new player full of qualities to triumph, who showed, in addition to an excellent style of play, great serenity of spirit. We are convinced that Vasco Horta e Costa, if he dedicates himself zealously to this sport, will become one of the good players in Portugal.
