John Whitehead attended Cambridge University and was later a member of the colonial civil service. He also served with the British Army on several occasions, including during World War One.

Whitehead, John Henry Marsden. Admitted pensioner, at Christ’s, October 1, 1892. Son of John Livesay Whitehead, M.D. School, Isle of Wight College, Ryde. Matriculated Michaelmas 1892; B.A. 1896.

Lieutenant 3rd Battalion, the Royal Irish Rifles. Served with the West Africa field force in the Aro Expedition, 1901-2, and in South Nigeria, 1902. Subsequently District Commissioner in South Nigeria. Served in the Great War, 1914-19 (Captain, West African Frontier Force).
