Death of Mr Herbert Penfold Hyland – Member of famous wine firm – Noted sportsman

Mr Herbert Leslie Penfold Hyland, Adelaide director of Penfold’s Wines, Ltd., died yesterday at the age of 65. Born at Brighton, Victoria, on March 4, 1875, he entered the firm in 1904. Penfold’s, which is one of the largest wine-making firms in Australia, was founded by Dr Rawson Penfold in 1844. A number of cuttings from famous vineyards in France were brought out by Dr Penfold when he came to Australia from England, and they were planted at Magill.

The first wine made on the premises from those cuttings resulted in five gallons being produced. It was used solely for medicinal purposes until its fame induced the doctor to begin the wine business on a commercial scale. In 1869, the late Mr Thomas Francis Hyland married the only daughter of Dr Penfold and was taken into the business.

Trade grew and greatly enlarged premises were built. Mr Frank Penfold Hyland, eldest son of Mr Hyland and present chairman of directors at the head office in Sydney, joined the business, and was followed soon afterwards by Mr Herbert Leslie Penfold Hyland (second son). The firm today controls wineries at Magill, Nuriootpa, Eden Valley, McLaren Vale in South Australia, and Minchinbury, Griffiths, Dalwood, Allendale, Sparkling Vale and Rhine Vale in New South Wales.

Built up Nurioopta

The late Mr Herbert Penfold Hyland was closely attached to the Nurioopta winery, which he planned and built himself, beginning about 1911. A brandy pot still, which holds 5,250 gallons in one charge, was stated to be the largest of its kind in the world. Much more wine is produced at Nurioopta than at Magill. The staff at the latter winery is about 100. The chief wine expert there has been with the firm for more than fifty years, and other employees for very long periods.

Mr Penfold Hyland was a prominent all-round sportsman. He played polo, tennis and golf, and was an excellent shot. He won the South Australian amateur golf championship twice, and the Royal Adelaide Club championship about thirty years ago. He was well known as a hydroplane racer, and his boat won the Centenary Cup in 1936. He was a member of the first interstate tennis team.

He has left a widow [née Edith Mary Miller], two sons – Mr Francis Penfold Hyland, the elder, who is carrying on the firm, and Mr Jeffrey Penfold Hyland, a member of the Second Australian Infantry Force – and a daughter, Mrs Ernest Jolly [née Evelyn Penfold Hyland], of Medindie.
