Louis Graves attended the University of North Carolina in his native Chapel Hill, where he excelled at American football and tennis. In later life he became a distinguished journalist and newspaper editor, and notably founded the Chapel Hill Weekly. He also contributed to publications such as the Atlantic Monthly, the Saturday Evening Post and the New York Times Magazine. He served in the American Army during World War One, becoming a captain in Company I, 324th Infantry, 81st Division in 1917. While still in Europe just after the war, he took part in the revived Wimbledon tournament in 1919. In 1921, Louis Graves married Mildred (‘Mim’) Moses, who collaborated on the Chapel Hill Weekly newspaper with him.
