Studied medicine at Trinity College, University of Melbourne. Later appointed house physician and then registrar at the Melbourne Hospital; also lecturer at the University of Melbourne and tutor at Trinity College (Melb.). Married Eileen Plews, whom he met while studying for the Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) examination in England in the mid-1920s; he also took part in some British lawn tennis tournaments during this time. Had originally gained his colours for tennis (and athletics) at Melbourne Church of England Grammar School.
