Prominent southern players – James L. Hudson (Lindisfarne)

James L. Hudson is Lindisfarne’s second string, and with Alan Newton has been largely responsible for the club’s success in the recent A-grade roster. He is another man who is as well known in the cricket field, having been one of the state’s most prominent players. He has been playing in A-grade tennis for a considerable number of years, having won the state doubles championship (with Thomas Newton) in 1909, whilst he also won the singles in 1918.

Hudson has had the honour of representing the state in tennis, having been a member of the team which visited New South Wales in 1915 (This has been the only official inter-state team sent by the Tasmanian Association.) Although he does not last as well now in a long and strenuous singles contest, his experience compensates to a great extent, and he is still a very formidable opponent to the other top southern players.

In doubles Hudson is particularly good. In the 1923 Southern Championships he reached the semi-final of the singles, being defeated by Richmond, and was runner-up in the doubles (with Kenneth Berriman) to James McGough and Thomas Newton.

Hudson has been completely successful in the singles round of the recent roster, defeating Hocking, 6-3, 6-3; T.W. Newton; 6-2, 6-5, Johnson, 5-6, 6-3, 6-0; and Hinman, 6-1, 6-0. His speciality is the cut stroke, at which he is most proficient He has a fine control of length with this stroke, and makes it shoot away far more quickly than any of the other southerners. He also volleys very well. Hudson’s recoveries of the most difficult shots are quite a big factor in his game, and he tosses very deeply at such times.
