Harding Frew, Noted Engineer, Dead at 69

Builder of 80 Queensland bridges, Mr Alison Eavis Harding Frew died at this home in Adamson Street, Eagle Junction, yesterday morning, aged 69. Bridges he designed and supervised included the £420,000 Grey Street Bridge, the Innisfail Jubilee Bridge, the Maryborough Granville Bridge and the Caboolture Bridge.

Born in Roma, Mr Frew was educated at the Brisbane Grammar School and the Sydney University. He began his professional career in the Queensland Railway Department in 1908. He was one of Australia’s best known consulting engineers. In 1911 he entered private practice, specialising in local authority works. He was associated with large metropolitan wharfage projects and with many works in North Queensland.

In 1920 Mr Frew extended his practice as a consultant to Victoria and New South Wales. More than 50 electrical projects were completed under his direction. He acted as consulting engineer for more than 100 local authorities in Queensland alone. For some years Mr Frew was consulting engineer to the old Brisbane Water Supply and Sewerage Board.

He also was responsible for water supply schemes at Atherton, Emerald, Mitchell, Mackay, and other centres, and inaugurated many toll bridge schemes. As supervising engineer he was associated with the £180,000 Hornibrook Highway. Sewerage schemes he undertook included that of Mackay.

Mr Frew represented Queensland and the Sydney University in tennis. He also played cricket and golf.
