In response to an appeal published in the Courier Mail newspaper (Queensland) in 1970 for ‘History and Relics’ of tennis to establish a ‘Hall of Fame’ of Queensland Tennis, Mrs E.H. Radcliffe, the widow of Mr John N. Radcliffe, forwarded a medal which was presented to her husband for winning the Queensland Junior Championship in 1911.

It was placed in a display cabinet but in the disastrous 1974 flood this and other memorabilia on display were under water and much was destroyed. However, the medal was found in the debris and is again placed on display as part of the History of Queensland Tennis. Mrs Radcliffe provided a photograph of and the following details concerning her husband:

“My late husband, John Norman Radcliffe, M.C., M.A., Dip.Ed., represented Queensland in 1912, 1913 and 1914, and again in the early 1920s. He was Rhodes Scholar for 1915. He represented the Brisbane Grammar School in tennis and was also tennis captain. Also champion and captain at Queensland University in 1912 and 1913. In 1913 he was a member of the Queensland Lawn Tennis Association Executive. In 1914 he won a university ‘blue’ for tennis and was runner-up in the men’s doubles (with Raymond F. Shirley) and winner of the mixed doubles (with Mall Mutch) in the State championships.

“He served in World War One in France in 1915-19 in the Royal Artillery, gaining the rank of captain, and was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.). in 1919 he was champion and captain of the Balliol College Oxford team, which won the competition for the first time in many years.

“In 1923 he was appointed Senior Master at Southport School in Queensland and taught there until his death in 1963. He was headmaster from 1940 to 1950, and always found time to coach the first tennis four at the school.”
