About

Jiří Lendl is perhaps best known as the father of the tennis great Ivan Lendl (b. 7 March 1960). However, Jiří Lendl was a gifted tennis player in his own right and, in the early 1990s, President of the Czech Tennis Federation. He was also a chess champion, notably winning the title of Junior Chess Champion of Bohemia and Moravia and, in 1964, finishing runner-up in the men’s event at the Czechoslovakian Chess Championships.

Jiří Lendl studied law at Masaryk University in Brno, obtaining his doctorate of law in 1949. In 1959, he married Olga Jeništová, who at one point would be ranked no. 2 in singles in Czechoslovakia. According to several sources, she was the driving force behind the success of their only child, Ivan, who would become the world’s top-ranked male tennis player in 1985.
