Obituary – Canon Montagu Hankey
The death has occurred at Lambert House, Dorchester, of Canon Montagu Hankey, one of the best-known clergymen in the diocese of Salisbury. He was Rector of Maiden Newton for about 45 years, and was a proctor for the diocese in Convocation, where he often-spoke. He was prominent in the cause of religious education, and worked zealously in defence of Church schools.
Canon Hankey, who had lived in retirement for some years, was an M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, was ordained in 1866, and served his first curacy at Ramsgate. Only two years after his ordination he went to Maiden Newton as rector. In 1866 he was appointed Prebendary of Lyne and Halstock in Salisbury Cathedral, and for a number of years he held the office of Rural Dean of Bridport.
