Death of Mr Gilbert B. Hone, B.A.
[Unsigned]
Many past and present scholars of Prince Alfred College, Adelaide, will regret to hear of the death, in his 23nd year, of Mr Gilbert Bertram Hone. The deceased, who was a son of Mr Nathaniel Hone [and Emily Sandland Hone], and a brother of Dr Frank Hone, of the Adelaide Hospital, won an exhibition from Sturt Street School, and had a distinguished career at Prince Alfred College, eventually gaining a university scholarship at Adelaide University. He secured the John Howard Clark Scholarship and ultimately took with honours the B.A. degree.
For some years he had been a Master at the College, but last Christmas had to give up work owing to failing health, and on Friday morning he passed peacefully away. Not only did he distinguish himself scholastically, but he was a capital cricketer and tennis player. The University Tennis Club had the benefits of his skill with the tennis racquet for some time; but about two years ago he practically gave up match tennis to play cricket on the Adelaide Oval with the Adelaides, for whom he played several remarkably brilliant innings.
With scholars and athletes alike he was exceedingly popular; a fellow athlete, who has known him for about twenty years, remarks, “A straighter, better fellow, no one would wish to meet.”
