About

Educated at the Penang Free School, Khoo Hooi Hye showed potential at lawn tennis when in his early teens. In 1918, he became Champion of the Penang Chinese Recreation Club and won the club title for several years thereafter. In 1922, he won the men’s singles title at the covered courts tournament in Singapore, and in 1923 he won the men’s singles title at the Malayan (later the Malaysian) Championships for the first time. In 1924, he represented Malaya at Wimbledon.

His notable successes in subsequent years included winning the men’s singles title at the Malayan Championships in 1925, 1926, 1927 and 1929, and the men’s singles title at the Singapore Championships in 1925, 1926, 1927, 1928 and 1929. In later years he represented China in international matches. His death at the age of 35 is thought to have been due to kidney trouble.
