John Stuart Milne was the brother of fellow lawn tennis player Ashley Stuart Milne. They were two of the nine children – four sons and five daughters – of John Latour Milne (1849-1930), who was born in Calcutta in British-occupied India and died in Edinburgh, and Leila Isabel Milne (née Stuart; 1856–1942). John Stuart Milne spent most of his adult life living in Scotland.
