A gas engineer by profession, Oswald Winstanley was the brother of fellow lawn tennis player Harold Winstanley. Oswald was killed in action in Gallipoli in August 1915 at the age of 27.

Oswald Coke Winstanley was the third son of Mr George Winstanley and the late Mrs Winstanley [née Harriet Coke Jephcott] of Crackley Hall, Kenilworth. He was born at Coventry on December 31, 1887. He entered Oundle School (Sidney House) in May 1901 and left in December 1904. Leaving school he joined his brothers in business. In November 1914 he enlisted in the 5th Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Later he was given a commission in the 5th Welsh Regiment and went with them to the Dardanelles in July 1915. He was reported missing on August 10, 1915, and his death was presumed to have occurred on that date.
