Jeremiah Selmes was an accountant by profession. He served with the Australian Army in South Africa during the Second Boer War and with the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (Anzacs) during the First World War. During the latter war, he was injured during service in both Gallipoli (Turkey) and Ypres (France). He rose to the rank of major and received the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) and the Colonel Auxiliary Forces Officers’ Decoration (aka the V.D.) amongst other awards for war service.
