About

William J. Lancaster was born in December 1869 in Rome, Italy. He was the son of Alfred Dobree Lancaster, an artist/painter, and Eliza Lancaster (née Ravenscroft). William matriculated at Oxford University in October 1893 (B.A., 1897; M.A., 1900). While a student at Oxford, he notably won the Newdigate Prize for Poetry in 1896 for a poem entitled the Goth in Italy. He later worked as a private tutor and reviewer.
