Frank Luard, as he was popularly known, was the son of Frederick Peter Luard, a career soldier in the British Army, who served in British India and rose to the rank of major general, and Lydia Maria Louise Luard (née Palmer). Frank Luard worked in a bank, where he rose to the position of manager.

Frank Luard married Constance Mary Wilson on 21 September 1907 in Hove, Sussex. She was from the renowned Wilson family of lawn tennis players and notably reached the All-Comers’ Final in the women’s singles event at Wimbledon in 1905 and 1907.
