Robert Wallace Glen Lee Braddell was born in 1859, the younger son of Thomas Braddell, an Irish sugar planter who later joined the East India Company before becoming a lawyer and the first Attorney-General of the British Colony of Singapore, and Anne Braddell (née Lee).

Robert Braddell studied law at Oxford University before being called to the Bar at the Inner Temple in June 1882. After his father’s retirement he also went out to the Straits Settlements and practised at the Singapore Bar in partnership with his brother, Sir Thomas Braddell, until December 1906, when he retired. He was the finest criminal lawyer and cross-examiner to have practised at the local Bar. The company founded by Robert Braddell and his brother, Braddell Brothers, is still operating today.

Robert Braddell was an admirable caricaturist, much of his work being published in illustrated magazines. Under the nom de plume of ‘K.Y.D’ he had cartoons of Sir Cecil Smith, the Maharaja of Johore and others published in the Vanity Fair series. Straits Produce contains much of his literary and artistic work. He also shared the family taste for theatricals and appeared in comic parts on many occasions, and could sing a good comic song.

Braddell was also a very fine billiard and lawn-tennis player, and earned his lawn tennis half-blue while a student at Oxford, where he won the men’s single title at the university tournament in 1881. Professional commitments later restricted his participation in tournaments.

In November 1882, he married, firstly, Mary Lawrence ‘Minnie’ Smith, daughter of the Reverend Thomas Smith, vicar of Brailes, near Banbury, Warwickshire. They had one son and one daughter together. After Minnie’s death in May 1931, he married for the second time the following year. Robert Braddell died in March 1936 at the age of 74.
