About

From the London Times, 30 August 1923: A Link with Sir Walter Scott. The Honorary Joseph Constable Maxwell-Scott, of Abbotsford, died at a nursing home in London yesterday after nine months’ illness. He was the third son of the tenth Lord Herrles, and uncle of the Duchess of Norfolk, who now holds that ancient Scottish barony, and was born on January 16, 1847. Educated at Stonyhurst, he joined the Rifle Brigade and served in the Ashanti War in 1873. In 1874 he married Mary Monica Walter-Scott, daughter of Mr James Robert Hope-Scott, Q.C., leader of the Parliamentary Bar, by his marriage to Charlotte, daughter of John Gibson Lockhart and granddaughter of Sir Walter Scott. Miss Hope-Scott [herself the author of historical novels and non-fiction] was the heiress of Abbotsford [former home of Sir Walter Scott], and on his marriage to her Mr Constable Maxwell took the additional name of Scott.
