About

George Arnulph Montgomerie was the brother of fellow lawn tennis player Seton Montolieu Montgomerie. They were two of the four children – three sons and one daugther – of Archibald William Montgomerie, 13th Earl of Eglinton, 1st Earl of Winton, a Conservative politican, and his first wife, Theresa Howe Cockerell (née Newcomen), for whom this was a second marriage.

On the death of the 13th earl in 1861, his eldest son, Archibald, inherited the titles, but Archibald died in 1892, when George inherited them, Seton, the second son, having died in 1883. George Montgomerie married Janet Lucretia Cuninghame on 13 November 1873; they had three sons and two daughters together, including Archibald Seton Montgomerie (1880-1945) who inherited his father’s title on the latter’s death in 1919.
