Julian Gaisford enrolled in the Royal Navy in 1875 and eventually rose to the rank of lieutenant. When on service in western Canada in 1886, he took part in the first edition of the British Columbia Championships in Vancouver and was runner-up in the men’s singles event. On the death of his father in 1898, Julian became the fourth Earl of Howth, a coastal suburb in north Dublin. He seems to have had to change his surname to Gaisford-Saint Lawrence due to inheritance-related problems.
