Joseph Congdon Belden, Ph.B. 1897 Yale grad., was the son of John Secord Belden of Chicago, who was a western manager Fire Ass. of Philadelphia, and a son of Charles Willis Belden (M D College of Physicians and Surgeons of the Western District of New York 1835) and Frances (Cummings) Belden of Warsaw, N Y, and Dubuque, Iowa.
Joseph's mother was Amanda Williams (Pool) Belden, daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Holt (Young) Pool of New London, Ct. His brother, Charles P. Belden, was a '93 S. Yale grad. He also had a brother John S. Belden Jr. and a sister Elizabeth.
Joseph was a purchasing agent and sales manager Kellogg Switchboard & Supply Co., Chicago, 1897-1902. He married June 7, 1902, in Kennworth, Ill, to Mary Campbell Rew (Northwestern University 1897-1901), daughter of Francis and Harriet Brady (Campbell) Rew. They had a son, Joseph Congdon, Jr., a 1926 S. Yale grad.
He organized the Belden Manufacturing Co. (makers of electrical wire cordage and cables) 1902 and had served as president and chairman of the board since that time; president Employers' Association of Chicago 1933-37, vice-president 1937 and 1938 and director 1932-36 Illinois Manufacturers' Association, director Lake Forest Trust & Savings Bank.
