A Tribute to Jean Wuarin

By Fernand Dominicé

It was on the occasion of a tennis tournament organized by our secondary school, in the Parc des Eaux-Vives, that we really got to know each other. Fate had been unkind to me and I suffered a crushing defeat without, at the time, being able to benefit from the extenuating circumstances. And yet Jean Wuarin was a budding Swiss champion! Great skills and quick reactions – these were the same qualities he demonstrated in his professional career and while fulfilling his political mandates. But there was more to him. He was kind and loyal, with a nice smile, sometimes a little sly, which said a lot about his feelings.

Like many of us, Jean Wuarin had learned a lot from his time as a scout with the Carouge Troop in Geneva. This training taught him an understanding of others, which is so necessary in human relationships. He was listened to on the City Council and on the Grand Council/Grand Conseil because of the charming way in which he expressed himself, combined with his sense of persuasion in defence of the causes to which he devoted himself, such as, in particular, that of small- and medium-sized businesses.

Professionally, he actively collaborated in the establishment of the “Swiss legal files” of which his brother, Albert Wuarin, also a lawyer, had been one of the initiators. More recently, Jean Wuarin had been called upon to sit on the Board of the Martin Bodmer Foundation, where his legal skills were a great contribution. Stopped too early in his activity as a lawyer, he nevertheless had the joy of seeing his eldest son enter the firm founded by his father and thus continue his family’s professional activity.

But it was during the many months that he had to live deprived of speech that the nobility of Jean Wuarin’s nature manifested itself. A husband and father of great quality, he accepted his infirmity with a class and a generosity of character which, through the courage and heart he displayed, revealed his deep nature. To his valiant wife, sons and sister, we offer our message of heartfelt sympathy.
