In 1928, Jack Mawdsley married fellow tennis player May Agnes Burgess, who was later women’s singles champion of Cairns and Far North Queensland for many years (from 1932 until her retirement in 1951.) Jack Mawdsley had been born in England, but spent most of his life in Australia. He met May while working as a piano player for the silent movies shown at the Tropical Pictures cinema in Cairns; May was working as an usherette in the same cinema.
