About

Wattie Jackson, as he was known, attended The Rockhampton Grammar School from the age of 14 and notably received a special prize for sport while there. He left school at 16 to work in sales in the sports department of the company O.E. Neale in Mackay, Queensland. (He was singles champion of Mackay and District from 1936 to 1940.)

Wattie Jackson enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force (R.A.A.F.) in July 1941. He took part in various courses, his final stage of training being at the Base Torpedo Unit in Nowra, New South Wales. On the morning of 12 April 1943, Wattie Jackson was seriously injured in a training exercise while flying with an all-Queensland crew near Jervis Bay in New South Wales. He later died of his injuries and was buried with full air force honours the following day. He was 23 and had attained the rank of sergeant.
