About

Herbert Henley Playford was the son of the rower Herbert Harlee Playford (1831-83), who notably won the Wingfield Sculls twice, and the Diamond Challenge Sculls at Henley Royal Regatta in 1854. In July 1886, Herbert Henley Playford married his step-sister Florence Boydell. They had two children together, but Florence later sought a separation and petitioned for divorce on the grounds of cruelty and adultery. The Playfords’ divorce was granted in September 1904.
