Jan van de Mortel was Mayor of Noordwijk from 1929 until 1946, although he was temporarily relieved of his post from May 1943 until August 1945 by the occupying German forces. He later held the position of Dutch Consul General in Chicago, Illinois. The street known as van de Mortelstraat, in Noordwijk, is named after Jan van de Mortel.
