Eric Portlock was the brother of fellow lawn tennis players Frank, Henry and Percy Portlock. They were four of the nine children – five sons and four daughters – born to George Thomas Portlock, a shipping broker and agent, and Ellen Celindah Court Portlock (née Brown), who married each other in Bombay, British India, in March 1870. Eric Portlock was an accountant by profession.
